Terms of Use

1. Agreement

These terms are an agreement between you and Path & Light (“we”, “us”), a small independent project based in San Francisco, California. They cover the Path & Light app for iPhone and iPad, its App Clip, its widgets and pathandlight.com (the “Service”). By using the Service you agree to them and to our Privacy Policy. If you don’t agree, please don’t use the Service.

2. Who can use Path & Light

You must be at least 13 years old. If you are under 18, you need permission from a parent or guardian, who agrees to these terms for you. The launch waitlist on this website is for adults aged 18 and over.

3. Your account

You sign in with Apple, Google or an email address. Keep access to that sign-in method secure; activity on your account is your responsibility. You can link more than one sign-in method, and linking accounts that each have data combines them. You can delete your account at any time in the app (Profile → Account → Delete account). Deleting an account doesn’t cancel an App Store subscription.

4. What’s free and what’s Plus

Free: the Bible in every included translation, search, highlights and bookmarks, the journal, streaks and reminders, home screen widgets, and a small daily allowance of Ask questions.

Path & Light Plus adds more Ask questions, written prayers and personal reflections, every day of every reading plan, Bible audio you can stream or download, and study notes, chapter quizzes and the original Hebrew and Greek words. Features may change as the app develops. If we remove a significant Plus feature, we’ll tell you in the app.

5. Subscriptions and billing

• Prices. In the United States Plus costs $79.99 a year, $4.99 a week or $12.99 a month. Prices elsewhere are set in local currency. The price, billing period and any trial are shown before you confirm, and that screen is what applies.
• Free trial. Eligible new subscribers can try the annual plan free for 7 days. Unless you cancel at least 24 hours before the trial ends, it converts to a paid annual subscription.
• Automatic renewal. Subscriptions renew automatically at the then-current price for the same period unless you cancel at least 24 hours before the period ends. Apple charges your Apple account at confirmation and at each renewal.
• Cancelling. Manage or cancel in your iPhone’s Settings → your name → Subscriptions. Cancelling stops the next renewal; you keep Plus until the end of the period you’ve paid for.
• Refunds. Apple handles all payments and refunds under its own policies. Request a refund at reportaproblem.apple.com. We can’t issue refunds for App Store purchases ourselves.
• Price changes. If we raise a price, Apple will notify you and, where required, ask for your consent before it applies to your subscription.
• Offers. Discounted or introductory offers, including offers when you cancel, apply only as described when you accept them.
• Church plans. A church may arrange Plus for its members. If you join with a church code, your access lasts as long as that church’s plan. We don’t pay churches or pastors for members who join.
• Offline access. Downloaded Plus audio keeps working offline for up to 7 days; after that the app needs to reconnect to confirm your subscription.
• Fair use. AI features have daily and monthly limits to keep costs sustainable. Current limits are shown in the app.

6. AI answers

Ask and written prayers use AI models to generate text. AI can be inaccurate, incomplete or out of step with your church’s teaching, and it can misquote or misattribute a verse. We ask it to point back to Scripture and to note where Christian traditions differ, but it can still get things wrong. Read the passage yourself, weigh answers carefully, and bring important questions to a pastor or someone you trust. AI answers are not theological authority, and they are not medical, legal, financial or psychological advice.

Don’t use AI features to produce content that is unlawful, hateful, sexually explicit, or intended to harm yourself or others. We may limit AI features if they are being misused.

7. Not a crisis service

Path & Light supports personal study and prayer. It is not counselling, pastoral care or an emergency service, and it doesn’t replace your church. If you are in crisis or thinking about harming yourself, contact your local emergency services. In the United States you can call or text 988 to reach the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.

8. Your content

You own what you write: journal entries, prayers, notes and questions. You give us a limited permission to store, sync, back up and display your content, and to send it to AI providers when you ask a question, solely to provide the Service to you. This permission ends when you delete the content or your account, apart from backup copies that expire on their own schedule. We don’t claim ownership of your content, and we don’t use it for advertising or to train AI models.

9. Acceptable use

Please don’t:

• break the law or infringe anyone else’s rights through the Service;
• access another person’s account, or share your own with people who don’t have their own subscription;
• probe, scrape or overload our systems, bypass usage limits or security, or reverse engineer the app except where the law allows it;
• use automated means to extract AI answers or content in bulk; or
• resell or redistribute the Service.

10. Scripture, artwork and our content

Some Bible texts in the app are public-domain translations: the King James Version, the World English Bible, the Reina-Valera 1909, João Ferreira de Almeida, Ang Dating Biblia, the 1910 Korean Bible and the Chinese Union Version. Others are used under license from their publishers: the NIV, ESV, NKJV, NASB 2020, NTLH, 개역개정 and Reina-Valera 1960. Licensed translations are for your personal reading in the app; please don’t copy them out in bulk or share them outside the app. Audio includes public-domain World English Bible narration by Michael Paul Johnson and volunteers and by David Williams, and narration we produce ourselves. Paintings are public-domain works from museum open-access collections, credited where they appear. Nothing in these terms restricts what you may do with public-domain material.

The Path & Light name, logo, app design, original writing (including written prayers and reading plans) and software belong to us. We give you a personal, non-transferable licence to use the app for your own non-commercial purposes while you follow these terms. The Cormorant Garamond typeface is used under the SIL Open Font License.

11. Other services

The Service relies on third-party services, such as the App Store and the sign-in provider you choose, and links to websites run by others. Their own terms apply to their services, and we aren’t responsible for them.

12. Apple App Store

If you downloaded the app from the App Store, these terms are between you and us, not Apple. Apple is not responsible for the app, its content, maintenance or support, or for any claims relating to it, including product liability, legal compliance or intellectual-property claims. If the app fails to conform to any applicable warranty, you may notify Apple for a refund of the purchase price, and Apple has no other warranty obligation. You must also follow the App Store’s usage rules. Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these terms and may enforce them against you.

13. Ending your use

You can stop using the Service and delete your account at any time. We may suspend or end access for anyone who seriously or repeatedly breaks these terms, or where the law requires it. We’ll give notice where we reasonably can. If we ever shut down the Service, we’ll give at least 30 days’ notice, and your journal will remain on your device.

14. Disclaimer

We work hard to keep Path & Light accurate and available, but the Service is provided “as is” and “as available”. To the fullest extent the law allows, we disclaim implied warranties, including merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose and non-infringement, and we don’t promise that the Service will be uninterrupted, error-free, or that data will never be lost. Keep your own copies of anything important.

15. Limits on liability

To the fullest extent the law allows, we aren’t liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive damages, or for lost data, profits or goodwill. Our total liability for any claim relating to the Service is limited to the greater of the amount you paid for Plus in the 12 months before the claim, or US$50. Some places don’t allow these limits, so they may not apply to you. Nothing here limits liability that cannot legally be limited.

16. Responsibility for misuse

If you use the Service in breach of these terms or the law and a third party brings a claim against us as a result, you agree to cover our reasonable costs of that claim, to the extent the law allows.

17. Governing law and disputes

California law governs these terms, without regard to its conflict-of-law rules. Before bringing a claim, please email us so we can try to resolve it informally within 30 days. Any dispute that isn’t resolved may be brought in the small claims court for your county, or otherwise in the state or federal courts in San Francisco County, California. Nothing in these terms takes away consumer protections that apply where you live.

18. Changes to these terms

We may update these terms as the Service changes. We’ll change the date at the top, and for material changes we’ll tell you in the app or by email before they take effect. If you keep using the Service after that, the new terms apply; if you don’t agree, you can delete your account and cancel your subscription.

19. General

These terms and the Privacy Policy are the whole agreement between us about the Service. If part of them is found unenforceable, the rest still applies. If we don’t enforce a provision straight away, we haven’t waived it. You may not transfer these terms; we may transfer them to a successor who takes over the Service and agrees to honour them.
